Yoga Nidra

“YOGA NIDRA IS THE SCIENCE OF RELAXATION WHICH ENABLES EACH OF US TO DIVE DEEP DOWN INTO THE REALMS OF THE SUBCONSCIOUS MIND, THEREBY RELEASING AN RELAXING MENTAL TENSIONS, AND ESTABLISHING HARMONY IN ALL FACETS OF OUR BEING”

– Swami Satyananda Saraswati

THE ART AND POWER
OF MINDFUL STILLNESS

In today’s world, which constantly demands more of our attention and action, it is incredibly important to cultivate practices that allow us to disconnect from external stimuli, pressure, and expectations, and to find a refuge of peace, silence, and stillness.

Paradoxically, the more we rest, the more stillness, peace, and deep mindful relaxation we invite into our daily lives, the more we receive and the more we are able to achieve. It’s not about procrastination or avoidance. It’s about learning the skill of finding stillness in motion and making decisions from a place of clarity and calmness.

YOGA OF AWARE SLEEP

Yoga Nidra, also known as “yoga of aware sleep” is a technique of deep, conscious relaxation. It is accompanied by pleasant sensations of releasing tensions accumulated at the physical (muscular), mental and emotional body. This is an extremely effective practice that allows us to reach a state in which we have access to the fullness of our inner power, both on a physical and spiritual level.

THE PRACTICE

A Yoga Nidra session begins with the body comfortably positioned lying down (Savasana), closing the eyes, and directing awareness inward.

It is a practice that involves transitioning from a state of doing and thinking to a state of being and feeling.

Through relaxation, mindful breathing, and visualization, you will be guided into an incredibly fertile meditative state between wakefulness and sleep, as your brain significantly slows down its activity.

In a state of full awareness, decision-making, and receiving external stimuli through the senses, your brain produces Beta brainwaves. The practice of Yoga Nidra gradually slows down your brain activity, shifting to Alpha brainwaves (a state of physical and mental relaxation), Theta brainwaves (a state of the subconscious mind and dreaming), and even Delta brainwaves (a state of deep, dreamless sleep, and body restoration), bringing you total peace and relaxation unlike anything else.

The above has a direct and significant impact on the quality of your rest and sleep, as well as on the ease of falling asleep. Your body will begin to recognize and settle with greater ease into a state of deep, restorative sleep and rest. Returning there will become – with time and practice – easier to achieve.

Compared to traditional meditation, Yoga Nidra is a passive practice which does not require you to maintain constant focus on a chosen meditation object. It relies on listening to the guiding voice and sensing all the sensations and feelings that arise in the body during the practice. All I will ask is that you refrain from movement and sleep, and allow yourself to pause, and experience total relaxation.

༄ NERVOUS SYSTEM REGULATION

Most people, due to their lifestyle choices, function daily in a “fight or flight” mode, where our body activates all its energy and strength to confront the threats indicated by the constantly high levels of cortisol, slowly depleting our organs and life functions. Our nervous system holds the key to change our lives. Intentional activation of the parasympathetic nervous system leads to an immediate transition from “fight or flight” to “rest and digest.” In this state, the body can activate its abilities for regeneration and restoration, anxiety disappears, and tensions dissolve under the influence of deep relaxation, which is our natural state.

༄ THE BODY

Chronic stress, pressure, and long hours of sedentary work accumulate in the body as muscle tension. Often, this tension is something we are unaware of, yet it negatively affects our well-being and health.

Yoga Nidra – through intentional practices that direct your awareness to specific parts of the body – acts like an internal massage, relaxing the muscles and releasing accumulated tension. This can be clearly sensed and felt during the practice. Regular practice can even lead to a sensation of drifting, as your body becomes lighter and more free from tension.

༄ THOUGHTS AND EMOTIONS

Release of tension, relaxation and peace of mind are the secret of transformation. When a man is under tension, his behavior is influenced, and when he relaxes, he becomes natural. (…) And knowledge of the truth only comes when you are free from tension.” – Swami Satyananda Saraswati

Yoga Nidra is also a powerful tool for releasing emotional and mental tensions.

Through intentional techniques, you have the opportunity to recognize and release accumulated and blocked emotions that may create the source of stress, discomfort, or even depression. This allows for the achievement of a state of stability and inner balance. In this case, individual practice is particularly recommended, during which we can focus on tailoring techniques to your needs, especially regarding recurring reactions and patterns in your life that you no longer wish to repeat.

SPIRITUAL DIMENSION OF YOGA NIDRA

Yoga Nidra is not only a relaxation technique but also a powerful tool for working with the subconscious mind, supporting spiritual growth, and discovering and realizing your true potential.

Yoga Nidra allows you to work with a personalized resolve, known as Sankalpa, directing your energy towards positive change and spiritual growth. This is not a typical affirmation practice. In the state of deep relaxation between wakefulness and sleep that Yoga Nidra offers, the mind becomes more pliable and open to suggestions.

Sankalpa

Invoking your own individual Sankalpa in this special moment allows your resolve to sink deeply into the subconscious mind, supporting your spiritual path.

It is an effective method for changing habits and addictions that are not beneficial for us.

With each practice, the resolve becomes more deeply rooted in your subconscious mind, and you can observe how this all-pervading force shapes the reality around you.

DISCOVER THE POWER OF INTENTIONAL PAUSE AND RELAXATION

Release of tensions, deep rest, and relaxation hold the key to a peaceful mind. With mental neutrality comes emotional stability. From this place, creativity and inspiration are within reach, and our awareness may focus on achieving higher goals.

The nervous system and its proper functioning are the keys to a reality filled with harmony and balance. These, in turn, provide the foundation for an abundant life.
